WEEK 1 — A NEW WAY TO SEE

Today we want to begin a new conversation.

For more than three decades, we have worked alongside leaders, teams and organisations navigating change, complexity, growth, disruption and uncertainty.

Again and again, we have been reminded of something deceptively simple.

Enterprises don’t fail for lack of effort. They often struggle because we see in fragments, and then act in isolation.

We focus on the structure, the strategy, the technology, the process, the behaviour or the individual problem in front of us. Each may matter. But none, on its own, is the enterprise.

An enterprise is a living human ecology.

Its health continually emerges through the relationships between purpose, people, conversations, decisions, systems, resources, learning and the environment in which all of these interact.

This is the starting point for Enterprise Stewardship.

It invites us to step back before stepping in. To see the whole before attempting to repair the parts. To notice relationships and patterns that are easy to overlook.

And to ask not simply, “What should we change?” but:

“What is happening in this living system — and what is it asking of us now?”

Over the next 16 weeks, we will share a series of ideas and practices from the 'Leadership Gold Canon' and our 'Illustrated Atlas of Enterprise Stewardship'.

Not as a finished answer. As an invitation to see, wonder, inquire and practice. Because perhaps the first act of stewardship is not action at all. It is learning to see.
